News for August – Exciting times

Monday, August 11th, 2014

Yowza, this year is just zipping by, though honestly I’ve got to that point of winter where I simply cannot wait for spring.  It’s been a wet and wild couple of months here in the Land of the Long White Cloud.  There have been storms, gales, hail, tornados and snow, and that was just last week.  Come on spring and summer!  I’m so excited that my Dad is coming to visit us from South Africa in September.  We haven’t seen him since we emigrated, more than 6 years ago.  And best of all he gets here just after the release of Book 4 so I can take a couple of weeks off and enjoy my time with him.  Having seen a disturbing news article about how people are abandoning black cats because they don’t photograph well, I thought I’d show you how wrong they are with a pic of my other ‘baby’.  Boy, has she grown from the tiny ball of fluff she was not so long ago.  She will be 1 in October so she’s still very playful and loves to bite – ouch!

 Jun July 2014 028

I’m currently doing my first major review of book 4, meaning it’s 90% finished J.  Just a few minor scenes to add in linking some actions scenes, and the last chapter to finish, which I always only do after my first run-through.  It’ll be going off to my ‘Alpha’ readers (I don’t class myself as the first reader) over the weekend, and hopefully they don’t find any major problems.  On top of that I’m busy planning a Minecraft party for my son who turns 8 on the 21st.  Oh dear, I really feel like I’m getting old.  Have any of you got Minecrafters in your house?  It’s quite something to wrap your head around if you’ve never played it before.  Anyhow, I think I have most of the planning done, the bulk of the shopping done, so now it’s just the cake and some party games to plan and then to prepare for the horde of around 20 children that have been invited (and to pray for sunshine, or at least not pouring rain!)

And now my exciting announcement!

hc4 release date

I will be in contact with my cover artist, the wonderful and talented Erin Kuhle, next week to start work on the new cover – one of my favourite parts of the whole process.  All going well I’ll have a cover release towards the beginning of September, but I’ll be sure to keep you posted on that one.

A while back I narrated a short section of book 1 for you all to hear.  I thought perhaps you’d all like to hear another section like that.  So I’m going to open up my Facebook page and my email for submissions.  If you have an all-time favourite scene, or just something you’d like to hear me narrate, make your nomination by commenting on my FB wall or sending me a message.  Remember to let me have the name of the book as well as what chapter it occurs in.  I’ll list the submissions and let you all vote for your favourite.  There is another giveaway over at Rafflecopter, so click on over http://www.rafflecopter.com/rafl/display/be11030e7/

Previously unseen snippet:

Gabi moved her chair slightly to be able to look at Mac without straining her neck.  Despite the tense set to his shoulders he appeared at ease in his surroundings; he’d swapped his well-worn jeans for a newer looking pair of beige corduroys and his earlier t-shirt for a blue and grey checked button-up.  A brown leather jacket hung from the back of his chair, apparently Jorge hadn’t managed to pry it away from him, and his brown leather boots had had an obvious clean and polish.  Gabi grinned;

“You clean up okay, Mac,” she teased.  He returned her grin wryly and opened his mouth to respond, then his eyes flicked to Julius and his grin dimmed, what he’d been about to say dying on his lips.

“Thank you, Ma’am,” he said with an odd formality.  Gabi sighed.

“You can be yourself here, Mac,” she said, catching and holding his gaze. “I won’t let anyone eat you, I promise.”

“She’s right,” Kyle chimed in, sensing Gabi’s need to put Mac at ease.  “No one’s ever been eaten on her watch.”  Gabi pulled a face at him, balling up a chunk of a dinner roll from the basket in centre of the table to throw at him.  He caught it and stuffed it into his mouth.  “Hmm, can you butter the next piece, thanks?”

“Please excuse the children, Mr Maclary,” Julius sighed like a long suffering parent, “But Gabrielle is right; there’s no need to censor your words, I’m not that easy to insult.”  He lifted his glass and breathed in the bouquet of the wine, hint of a smile tugging at his lips as he continued.  “And truly, she wouldn’t let me eat you.”  A startled huff, almost a guffaw left the older man, and much of the rigid tension of his shoulders eased.

“Well then, I guess, considering she’s on my side of the table, I’ll take my chances,” Mac stated, with his first genuine amusement of the night.
